Howard Present
President and Chief Executive Officer, Board Member, Co-Founder
Mr. Present is Co-Founder, President and CEO of F-Squared Investments. F-Squared is a privately-held, SEC registered boutique investment management firm providing investment advisory and portfolio management services for Financial professionals, Wealth managers, Institutional investors and sub-advisory services for mutual funds. F-Squared was founded with the explicit mission of redefining how quality investment management can be reliably delivered to investors.
Prior to F-Squared, Mr. Present was Managing Director at Evergreen Investments where he was a member of the Evergreen Executive Committee. Mr. Present ran global product management and strategy for the firm, led the successful multi-billion dollar business launch into closed end funds, and was business owner of the Alternative Investments, Managed Accounts, VA, and 529 businesses. He was also a lead participant in the firm’s M&A efforts.
Prior to joining Evergreen, he was a Managing Director at Putnam Investments, where he founded the firm’s Corporate Product Management department. He also was Partner and Director of Strategy for the Boston Financial Group, a leader in the real estate investment industry, and spent 6 years at Chase Manhattan Private Bank where he ran the firm’s offshore fund business.
Mr. Present earned a BS in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from Emory University, where he was awarded the Robert W. Woodruff Fellowship for academic excellence.
Mr. Present is frequently quoted in the financial press, and is a recurring guest on CNBC. He has also authored or co-authored several strategy white papers and research studies covering the investment industry, including a 2006 Study in conjunction with Financial Research Corporation entitled “THE NEW GATEKEEPERS: Navigating the Investment Manager Selection Process at Distributors.”
George McClelland
Vice Chairman and Director of Business Development, Board Member, Co-Founder
Mr. McClelland is Co-Founder, Vice Chairman, and Director of Business Development for F-Squared Investments. Mr. McClelland has experience in the computer, software, telecommunications, financial services, Internet auction, nanotech and medical delivery fields. Mr. McClelland has held senior positions at Data General, Fidelity Investments, University of Massachusetts Medical Center and United Asset Management. He has founded, or co-founded The Charitable Gift Fund and eSecLending companies, where he was Chairman and CEO.
He currently serves on the board of Safeguard Scientifics, Inc. and Friends of the Children, Boston; and is member of the Board of Advisors for Executive Resources International. He has previously served on the boards of Windward Investments (now Windhaven), Riverstone Networks, Storage Networks, The Campbell Group, OSV Partners, Acadian Asset Management, Dwight Asset Management, Clay Finlay, Rogge Partners, Palledyne, Murray Johnstone, L&B Realty Advisors, C S McKee, Advisory Committee of the Group of Thirty, and others.
Mr. McClelland has lectured at MIT, Boston College, and Bentley College. He also has the rare distinction of having Harvard Business School write a case series on entrepreneurship and leadership based on his experience. This case is taught to all first year students. His educational background includes Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, from which he graduated cum laude with a BA in economics, and Harvard Business School, from which he received an MBA (with distinction). In 1998 he was awarded a Ph.D., Humane Letters from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Vadim Fishman
Managing Director and Chief Technology Officer, Co-Founder
Mr. Fishman is Co-Founder, Managing Director and Chief Technology Officer of F-Squared Investments. Prior to F-Squared Investments, Mr. Fishman was the Founder and CEO of IntelDM, Inc., a consulting firm providing mathematical and programming services for the financial services and biotech industries.
Previously, Mr. Fishman was Software Project Manager for Artann Laboratories, where he led software development of new medical diagnostic devices. In this capacity, he designed and developed near real-time methods and software for 2D- and 3D-medical image analysis. He has also held analytical and development roles for such firms as Markov Processes, Inc., Minimax Ltd. in Kharkov, Ukraine, and the Kharkov Institute of Industrial Buildings.
Mr. Fishman is fluent in multiple computer and web programming languages, software and database programs. He earned an MS in Technology from the Kharkov Politechnical University in Kharkov, Ukraine.
Richard F. Tomney
Managing Director, Investments
Mr. Tomney is Managing Director, Investments for F-Squared Investments, Inc. F-Squared is a
privately-held, SEC registered boutique investment management firm providing investment
advisory and portfolio management services for Financial professionals, Wealth managers,
Institutional investors and sub-advisory services for mutual funds. F-Squared was founded with
the explicit mission of redefining how quality investment management can be reliably delivered
to investors.
Prior to F-Squared Rick was Marketing Director at Gottex Fund Management responsible for
institutional sales and client service to North American clients and consultants. Mr. Tomney has
also held the position of Deputy Chief Investment Officer for Liberty Ridge Capital. In that
capacity, he was responsible for facilitating projects related to the investment process including the revamping the investment models and universe screening tools. He also assisted the Chief Investment Officer in managing the daily operations of the investment management department. Additionally Rick served as Risk Officer, overseeing the implementation of risk management techniques and systems. He was also responsible for product development at the firm for both institutional and retail offerings.
Prior to joining Liberty Ridge Capital, Mr. Tomney was vice president in the Corporate Product
Development Group at Putnam Investments. Rick also held other senior product positions at
United Asset Management Corporation and Fidelity Investments. Rick received a BS and an
MBA in finance and marketing from Boston College.
Deborah Deskavich
Managing Director, Head of Operations & Chief Compliance Officer
Ms. Deskavich joined F-Squared in June, 2009. Before joining F-Squared, she was Controller at LightLife Foods, a division of ConAgra Foods, where she had responsibility for all financial activities as well as overall operations of the business. Prior to LightLife, Ms. Deskavich spent 14 years at Fidelity Investments where she held a series of senior positions covering the financial management, strategic planning, and operations. Her experience at Fidelity covered brokerage, investment management, retirement services, venture, and global business lines. Prior to joining Fidelity, Ms. Deskavich spent 9 years at Data General Corporation in the Finance department.
Ms. Deskavich is a Certified Financial Planner, and she has received an APC in International Business degree from Northeastern University, an MBA in Finance and a BS in Economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Bill McNamara
Managing Director - Independent Advisor & Wealth Channel
Mr. McNamara has been engaged in the investment industry since 1992, focusing on Channel Management, Distribution & Marketing, and Investment Product Management. In the 1990s, Bill held a series of leadership roles in the retail investor business at Fidelity Investments. He led business planning, new product development, and pricing for retail brokerage unit. From 1997 through 1999, he was divisional CFO for Fidelity's retail phone operations, a key distribution channel with over 3600 representatives serving individual investors.
Beginning in 1999, Bill has focused on the advisor and institutional markets for investment management. He led Product Management & Development for Fidelity Advisor product line. Following a role as head of Competitive Strategy for the intermediary business, he managed the Advisor Marketing function, integrating marketing and salesforce efforts to grow assets and relationships.
At F-Squared Investments, Bill is the Managing Director for the Independent Advisor & Wealth Channel. In addition, he provides marketing and business development support for the firm as whole.
Mr. McNamara received his B.A. in Economics from Williams College, and his MBA from the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College. He resides in Wellesley, MA with his wife and two children.
William Carey
President, F-Squared Retirement Solutions
Mr. Carey is President of F-Squared Retirement Solutions, a subsidiary of F-Squared Investments. F-Squared is a privately held SEC registered investment advisory firm providing investment advisory and portfolio management services for financial professionals, wealth managers, and institutional investors.
Mr. Carey has over 25 years of experience in the financial services and retirement industry. Prior to F-Squared Investments he led the distribution business' for OppenheimerFunds . Previously, Mr. Carey was with Bank of America where he led the Banks's retirement business and distribution and client management for Bank of America/ Merrill Lynch retirement. Mr. Carey spent 14 years with Fidelity where his responsibilities included serving as President of Fidelity Institutional Retirement Services Company and Fidelity Registered Investment Advisor Group.
Mr. Carey received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Bates College in 1982. He has served on a number of industry and not-for-profit boards and is currently on the board of trustees for Bates College.
Richard B. Weed, CFA
Managing Director, Investments
Mr. Weed is a Managing Director of the firm and sits on F-Squared's Investment Committee. Mr. Weed has over 20 years of investment management experience with extensive portfolio management,
risk-control, quantitative modeling, product research and design expertise.
Previously, Mr. Weed was the CIO of Vernon Square Capital, a long-short, market neutral hedge fund based in Boston. Prior to founding Vernon Square Capital, Mr. Weed spent 9 years at Putnam Investments, where he led the Small and Emerging Growth Equities Team. He also spent 8 years at State Street Global Advisors, where he was a Senior Portfolio Manager in the US Active Equities team.
Mr. Weed earned an S.M. from the MIT Sloan School of Management, an MS from Northeastern University in Chemical Engineering, and a BS from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Chemical Engineering.
James T. Celico
Managing Director, F-Squared Alternative Solutions
Mr. Celico is Managing Director of F-Squared Alternative Solutions, a subsidiary of F-Squared Investments. F-Squared is a privately held SEC registered investment advisory firm providing investment advisory and portfolio management services for financial professionals, wealth managers, and institutional investors.
Prior to joining F-Squared Mr. Celico co-founded 3 affiliated financial services firms in New York, HRC Partners, Liberty Street Advisors and Liberty Street Securities. Jim was the thought leader behind HRC and led the business development team responsible for raising over 8 billion dollars for a variety of asset managers. He was a seed investor and CFO for Liberty Street Advisors, a Registered Investment Advisor to a series of mutual funds, and Liberty Street Securities, a broker dealer distributing hedge funds and other investment products. Prior to creating HRC, Jim held positions in the defined contribution group at Brentwood Asset Advisors and the Asset Management Services and Investment Divisions of The Hartford. He began his career with Fortis Investors.
Mr. Celico is the founder of The RIA Network Group, a consultancy providing strategic guidance to Single/Multi Family Offices and other investment advisors to some of the country's wealthiest families and institutions. He earned a BS in Accounting from Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA and resides in Providence RI with his wife and two children.
Laura Dagan
Advisor to the Board
Laura Dagan retired in 2010 from her role as Chairman of Dwight Asset Management
Company, a fixed income and stable value investment manager for institutional clients.
She previously served as Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer and Managing
Director following a career as a portfolio manager with the firm. During her 22+ year
tenure at Dwight, the company grew from $2 billion to $68 billion in assets under
management and expanded from a stable value specialist to a fixed income manager
providing customized solutions for retirement plan and insurance company clients. She
was also a member of the Top Leadership Group of Dwights parent company, Old
Mutual plc, and a director of Old Mutual Trust Company and the Stable Value Investment
Association. She is a recognized stable value expert and has commented in publications
including Pensions & Investments, Institutional Investor and the Wall Street Journal in
addition to appearances on CNBC.
She is currently Vice Chairman of Champlain Colleges Board of Trustees, the State
Treasurers appointee to the Vermont Capital Debt Affordability Advisory Committee,
Advisory Board and Investment Committee member of F-Squared Investments LLC, and
participates on the Board of the Humane Society of Chittenden County. In addition, she
is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder, a member of the CFA Institute and
its Standards of Practice Committee, a founding director and prior president of the
Vermont CFA Society, a member of the Vermont Business Roundtable, and a member of
Board Leaders, a Boston-based organization focusing on director education and
discussion of timely issues.
Ms. Dagan received a Bachelor of Science degree from Bucknell University, completed
the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School, and attended the
Womens Director Development Program at the Kellogg School of Management.
Tom Mann
Advisor to the Board
Thomas F. Mann possesses over 30 years of experience in various senior management positions in large, global financial institutions and small entrepreneurial environments. Mr. Mann possesses unique sell and buy side perspectives in traditional fundamental and quantitative long only asset management and uncorrelated alternative investments. Mr., Mann has created and managed many successful entrepreneurial, dedicated teams with minimal turnover. Many of his mentees have advanced to senior positions within the institutional asset management profession.
Presently, Mr. Mann is a Managing Director and Senior Banker at Societe Generale ("SG") for the leading US domiciled banks and asset managers. Total 2010 NBI was in excess of $200 million. Immediately prior to being assigned this position, Mr. Mann was the Head of the Financial Institutions Group ("FIG" Americas) of SG. As such he has recruited and manages a team of senior bankers reaching from Canada to Brazil emphasizing SG's solutions for insurance companies, banks, asset managers, funds and hedge funds. Increasingly in the last 24 months these solutions have been focused primarily on corporate and third party managed assets and risk management. Mr. Mann spearheads the institutional sales effort for all asset management related entities: asset managers, institutional and corporate investors, family offices, external and internal broker-dealers.
Mr. Mann was recruited to re-position FIG from SG Constellation in June of 2005. After SG's acquisition of Constellation Financial Management ("CFM") in July, 2003, Mr. Mann was appointed a Managing Director where he was the senior member of the business management team directing US sales and client relationships of asset managers, insurance companies and banks.
Mr. Mann was a co-founding Managing Principal of "CFM" (1993-2003). At CFM Mr. Mann was in charge of business planning and management and sales calling on the "C Suite" strategic decision makers. CFM pioneered the industry of providing an off-balance sheet, nonrecourse financing solution for the payment of upfront commissions made on behalf of mutual fund, insurance and banking companies distributing financial savings products. To protect CFM's purchased cashflows from the capital market volatility, CFM developed a proprietary risk management platform and trading process to accept and manage actively managed portfolio basis risk. Starting in 1995 through the merger of the business to SG in 2003, CFM advanced approximately $2.5 bn of commissions representing $50bn of assets under management with 35 companies in 5 global jurisdictions.
Prior to starting CFM, Mr. Mann served five years as Vice President and Chief Strategist of both the Equitable Parent Holding Company and the Investment Holding Company prior to being promoted to head and re-position Human Resources. In these positions, the incumbent was intimately involved in long-term industry developments, investment strategies and the restructuring of the company and its major subsidiaries. The incumbent also was a trustee of Equitable's pension and 401(k) plans.
Mr. Mann was also affiliated with Sperry Corporation (1983-1986), a major Fortune 500 computer and defense electronics concern. While there, he served at the Executive Office as the Director of Business Development for Defense and Aerospace, and Computer Systems. As Director, the incumbent initiated, managed and significantly funded the company's corporate partnership venture capital program.
The incumbent spent the first eleven years of his career at Chase Bank. He served in various executive, intraprenuerial and financial positions for fee based investment services rising to the level of Vice President and Division Executive of the quantitatively based Financial Advisory Services Group.
Mr. Mann is presently an independent director of AIP Alternative Strategies Funds where he has served since September of 2002 and chairs the valuation committee. AIP is the pioneer and leading '40 Act mutual fund exclusively using hedge fund managers as its sub-advisors.
The incumbent graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS degree from the State University of New York (Albany) in 1972. The incumbent possesses an MBA from New York University and a JD from Fordham Law School where he remains engaged as a member of the Dean's Planning Council. Additionally, the incumbent completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
Professional Associations include being a member the New York State Bar Association, a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts, as well as having become a Chartered Financial Analyst in 1979. Charitable Boards include Boy Scouts of America Explorers, the St. Joseph's School for the Deaf, and Chairman of the Wilton Educational Foundation. He is active in his community of Wilton, CT supporting many charitable organizations and has served as the clerk of Session of the Wilton Presbyterian Church as well as acting as Co-Chair of the Sanctuary Capital Campaign. Mr. Mann is married with two children.
Steve Ricci

Career venture capitalist, co-founder of OneLiberty Ventures, now Special Partner at Flagship Ventures
Mr. Ricci serves as Vice Chairman and Managing Partner within the Information Technology sector for Flagship Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm. He has over 30 years of experience in the venture capital industry and has been directly involved in the financing of over 125 companies. Prior to the formation of Flagship Ventures, Mr. Ricci was a General Partner at OneLiberty Ventures, a predecessor firm to Flagship. Prior to joining OneLiberty in 1994, he was a General Partner at Palmer Partners. Mr. Ricci's early career includes several years in manufacturing engineering with Dupont and Cambridge Tool. He has an engineering degree from Tufts University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Mr. Ricci is a past president of the New England Venture Capital Association, and he was a founding advisor to Gilde Ventures.
During the past two decades, Mr. Ricci has developed an extraordinarily deep and broad understanding of the businesses and business models in the information and communications technology sector. He has been involved in the financing of many highly successful companies including Astral Point Communications, Banyan Systems, CardScan, Charter Systems, Cintas, Gensym Corp., i-Logix, Indus River Networks, NetGenesis Corp., Stratus Computer, and Summa Four.
Mr. Ricci currently serves on the following Flagship company boards: Brainshark, Carbon Design and ZoomInfo. He also works closely with Converged Access, Polatis and SiCortex.
